The TRML Book Set Selection Process begins with the California Preschool Learning Foundations. The second level of the flowchart is to select a Concept, such as Living things. The third level of the flowchart branches to one or more Topics, such as Animals or Insects. The fourth level of the flowchart is a non-fiction book on the topic, such as the book Follow Me for the topic Animals. The fifth level of the flowchart is a fiction book such as the River Otter's Adventure. Non-fiction book builds background knowledge and teaches important vocabulary for the topic. The narrative fiction book promotes children's inference-making and useful vocabulary for reading.
